The late March car run, entitled The North East Tamunatana & Film Cars Drive, was expertly organised by Gaston Westphal. We were blessed with glorious sunshine and clear skies, making it the perfect opportunity for members to slide open sunroofs, lower windows, and fully embrace the beauty of Mallorca’s roads and countryside.
We gathered at Son Catiu Tafona & Restaurant, just east of Inca, where coffee and refreshments were available before departure. The turnout was excellent, with 24 cars in attendance and 50 members joining the run, which was another impressive show of enthusiasm and support for what promised to be a great event.
After a briefing and the handing out of instructions, cars set off at 11:00am at one-minute intervals. As we have come to expect from Gaston, the run was imaginative, well-structured, and full of character. The theme for the day was “Film Cars,” celebrating iconic vehicles from classic films such as Bullitt, Thelma and Louise, Back to the Future, The Italian Job, and Miami Vice. Along the route, members were challenged with a series of questions linked to these legendary cars and films, adding an engaging and competitive element to the drive.
The run was thoughtfully divided into three stages. The first took us from Son Catiu through the northern outskirts of Inca, passing through Manacor de la Vall, Caimari, and Selva, before reaching Campanet. This section offered a gentle and scenic introduction, winding through charming villages and open countryside.
The second stage followed part of The Rally Clasico - Stage C1, which led North towards Pollença. This stretch proved to be narrower and more technically demanding, but it rewarded drivers with some truly spectacular scenery. The Tramuntana foothills looked magnificent in the sunshine, and the driving experience was both engaging and memorable. Towards the end of this section, several members took the opportunity to stop at the Mad Donkey rescue centre for a coffee break—a delightful and unexpected highlight.
From there, the route continued along the Ma-2200 into the third and final stage, once again following part of The Rally Clasico route - Stage D1, along the Ma-10, which took us to the outskirts of Santuari de Lluc. We then drove on the Ma-2131 heading south through Caimari, Selva, Inca centre, eventually taking us back to Son Catiu for a well-earned lunch.
Gaston’s route planning showcased the very best of the north-east Tramuntana region, combining sweeping landscapes with the charm of Mallorca’s traditional towns. Particularly enjoyable was the decision to take us directly through the centres of several villages, allowing members to appreciate their character, architecture, and atmosphere up close.
At the end of the run, as we entered the restaurant, Gaston gave members a choice of two further questions linked to video clips, and the first video was from Bullitt, asking if the sound of the engine in the film clip was from the Mustang, or was it made by a different Ford engine. The other was a short movie clip from The Italian Job (1969). The question was: How many Minis in the film were provided free of charge by the manufacturer—the correct answer being ‘None’.
Lunch at Son Catiu was a true highlight and a perfect end to the day. A delicious three-course meal was served, with the main course standing out in particular—a generous and beautifully prepared selection of meats, including lamb chops, quail, and other excellent cuts. Wine, beer, soft drinks, and coffee were all included, rounding off a thoroughly enjoyable dining experience.
As we relaxed over lunch, answers were collated and carefully marked. Congratulations go to our winners: in third place, Raphael Springman (driving a 1955 Chevrolet Pickup); in second place, Andy and Sadie Sutherland (in a 1957 MGA Roadster); and in first place, Matthias Ohm and Marisa de Luca (in a 1966 Austin Healey MK III). Very well done to all.
